How to Get Into Data Governance: Connect the Rooms
Three messages I get every week: "How do I get into data governance?"
Here is the advice I wish someone had given me.
You do not need to be the most technical person in the room.
You need to be the person who connects the rooms.
The skills that actually get you hired and promoted in this field:
- Learn the language of both sides - enough data engineering to be credible, enough business to be useful.
- Master the frameworks - DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM, and the privacy basics (PIPEDA, GDPR concepts). Certifications open doors; understanding keeps them open.
- Volunteer for the unglamorous work - data quality cleanup, documentation, the catalog nobody wants to own. That is where trust is built.
- Write about what you are learning - your future employer is watching how you think, not just what you know.
- Build relationships before you need them - every opportunity in my career came through a conversation, not a job board.
The field is growing faster than the talent supply. There has never been a better time to start.
